Already frustrated, Zeke forced himself to calm down, and tried a different tack. “I need to make a phone call,” he said clearly, succinctly, and as coolly as he could. He wanted to sound completely serene.

Nobody ever helps the crazy guy.

“Mr. Traynor. It’s the middle of the night. You don’t want to make a call this late, do you?” Her wizened eyes crinkled even more at the corners.

He glanced around to find a clock and didn’t see one. “What time is it?”

She glanced at her watch. “Nearly four thirty in the morning. Try to get some rest, Mr. Traynor. I’ll call your doctor so that he knows you’re up and coherent. If all your other tests come back as expected, I’m sure the doctor will consider transferring you out of ICU very soon.”

Zeke sensed she was about to desert him and go about whatever she’d been doing before.

“Listen. I need to contact my friend. He’ll already be awake, I promise.” Zeke knew Luke’s schedule better than anyone. His friend always woke like clockwork at four thirty in the morning. Zeke, meanwhile, always woke at about that time and then went back to sleep to wait for his alarm to go off. Maybe why his internal clock woke him so early this morning in the first place.

She shook her head with an I know what’s best expression shaping her face. “Let’s wait at least a couple more hours, then you can make your call. All right?”

“No. Bring me a phone now. I need to find out what happened to the woman I was with at the bank. Do you know if someone else was brought to the hospital from the robbery? If there was a woman hurt?”

“I’m sorry, I don’t know anything about what brought you here or the circumstances after you arrived.”

“Then please find me someone who does.” 92
